Military Personnel

Active military personnel permanently stationed in Virginia, including the Pentagon, are treated as Virginia residents for the purchase of a handgun.

  • Identification and residency are established by the following:
    • a military photo ID issued by the United State Department of Defense
    • proof that Virginia is the permanent duty station via current military assignment orders

Exceptions

  • All handgun buyers in North Carolina must have a permit from their local sheriff or concealed carry permit
  • ​For Maryland residents, please call your State police or a FFL dealer.

What do I need to bring to purchase an "assault firearm"?

An "assault firearm" is defined as any semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol that expels single or multipe projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of offence with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock.

You need ONE (1) form of ID

  • One must be a government issued State Photo ID with current address
    • an original, not a copy
    • must be obtained at least 30 days prior to attempted purchase
  • The second ID must have a matching address. It can be:
    • current lease, utility bill, telephone bill, voter registration card, bank check, passport, automobile registration, hunting license, or fishing license

Proof of Citizenship or lawful residence must be presented

  • Must present one of the following:
    • ​a certified birth certificate, current U.S. Passport, U.S. citizen ID card, voter registration card, selective service registration card, or an immigrant or registration card issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service
